Bio

JOYA (birth name Joya Owens) born in Detroit, Michigan, United States is an American R&B/soul singer - songwriter, who released her debut album, Here I Am with Producer Vincent Herbert on Atlas/A&M record label.   Like many singers from Detroit, JOYA started singing in the church.  Just prior to inking her first record deal, she was vocally trained by Dr. Mattie Moss Clark (Mother/Founder of The Clark Sisters Gospel Group).

For her debut performance, JOYA had the honor of sharing the stage with the Legendary Richard Carpenter and Sheryl Crow.   Following her debut album release, JOYA was a Songwriter and featured Vocalist for various artists' including R&B/soul singer Mary J. Blige.  She also toured as a background singer during Blige's Share My World Tour in 1998 and recorded on Mary’s Live Album, “The Tour”.

JOYA started singing at a very young age but didn’t develop her pen for Songwriting until 1997.  JOYA gives Kurupt (formerly of Tha Dogg Pound), Arlene Delvalle and Teresa Evans (Soul Life) credit for assisting her to land her first gig behind the board.  JOYA performed and co-wrote with Ronnie Henson (Uptown Records) a song entitled “Somehow” for the Latin R&B heart throbs, Voices of Theory.  The song was an instant success and from there she wrote for almost every artist on the label.

By early 2000’s JOYA teamed up with Dan Evans and Dupre Kelly to create her first indie Album.  Pages From The Book of Life, Chapter 1.  Pages was released in 2001 and sold over 10,000 copies to date.

Soon after the album’s release JOYA and Dupre continued to pen and landed their first songwriting deal for Licensing and SYNC with LoveCat Music.  Now writing for Major Television Networks, Film and major recording artists, JOYA finally found her calling.

Today JOYA continues her love for writing in Film, Cinema and Television.  JOYA was also the voice of FORD© ‘s commercial/campaign “Born To Roll ©”.  She’s the founder of her new company The Friendship Society© powered by Kobalt © in the early part of 2018.  More about The Friendship Society here.
